Rare. Cezanne - Letters (3rd Edition 1946)

$120.00

“Paul Cézanne is one of the most significant contributions ever made to the history of modern painting. The book contains all of Cézanne's letters that have been preserved, , and includes in addition replies to some now lost, thus providing valuable evidence as to their contents.

That Paul Cézanne is one of the great painters of all time is no longer in doubt. Cézanne the man, however, is still something of an enigma. A great many theories, not always of the soundest, have been attributed to him on the strength of sayings and writings divorced from their context. For this reason especially the book is absorbing and important. We see for the first time the real Cezanne as revealed by his own words.

New aspects of his painting appear, and even those letters which have no direct bearing on his work contribute to a fresh and authentic picture of this personality which is so much alone. A master, like all truly great painters, of strictly pictorial form, his sole aim was to 'réaliser la nature; and this aim has been misrepresented in a mass of theoretical speculation, based on nothing more than a wealth of anecdote which is largely misleading. The book contains fifty-two illustrations, some of which are reproduced here for the first time.”
